PRASETIYA MULYA UNIVERSITY: A 21 ST CENTURY COLLABORATIVE UNIVERSITY
Prasetiya Mulya’s mission is to work for the progress of the diverse nation of Indonesia through promoting the business world as the key driver in the origination and use of applied science. The year 2016 marks a new beginning for the Prasetiya Mulya family with the transformation of its status from Prasetiya Mulya School of Economics to Prasetiya Mulya University. Its core mission, however, remains intact: to participate in the advancement of the nation’s plural, intelligent and superior people by promoting the business world.
For 34 years, since 1982, Prasetiya Mulya School of Economics has served as Indonesia’s school of choice for management studies. Through diversification to applied Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), it aims to push the business community to move gradually to a more inclusive and sustainable source of growth, namely through the origination and use of STEM.
The emergence of complex and collaborative STEM-based civilization is the main reason for Prasetiya Mulya University’s transformation. Although technological advancement has always been pivotal in the evolution of civilization, its changes happening today will remain a throbbing punctuation--let alone by the end of the 21st century as man may arrive at what was dubbed by Michio Kaku as “Civilization Style 1”.
Mastery of STEM is, therefore, a necessary part of Indonesia’s journey to a place of honor among nations. No matter how many STEM universities are existing, every one of them still needs strengthening.
The second reason relates to Indonesia’s changing demographics and its policy to accelerate human-capital accumulation, which will concurrently shape the 15-year period leading to 2030 as the peak of the expansion of higher education in Indonesia. The success of our 12-year compulsory education will lead to a more robust growth of higher education, which will also become more varied in response to the Zeitgeist (spirit of the times).
The third reason is the determination to make the most of the university’s success as a management school that supports Indonesia’s struggle towards a worthy place among advanced nations. The biggest challenge being that in accelerating its human capital accumulation as product of health, numeracy, literacy, expertise and entrepreneurship, Indonesia requires to multiply such a success thoroughly.
Cognizant of today’s challenges amidst the higher education landscape in contemporary Indonesia, Prasetiya Mulya University strives through cooperation and competition by relying upon uniqueness. At the present stage it focuses on academic programs that will help strengthen business excellence as an element of the nation’s superiority. As such, the emphasis is more on technical programs--or applied STEM, than on pure science. Offering various programs in Management, Business Economics, Tourism, International Business Law, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Food Technology, Renewable Energy Engineering, Business Mathematics, and Product Design Engineering, Prasetiya Mulya University is thus set with its educational services.
To navigate successfully in the 21 st century’s higher education landscape, Prasetiya Mulya University is designed as a university of collaboration. On the one hand, this means combining clusters of applied social sciences with STEM as a collaborative initiative to solve major problems in life, including the greatest problems that face humanity. On the other, the university collaborates with actors of the business world, which includes small and medium enterprises, in yet bigger and more complex collaboration. Therefore, the Three Pillars of Tertiary Education (Tri Dharma) are manifested in business practices. These practices, in turn, become enlightened through education and research.
Prasetiya Mulya University is also designed to be a “dual university” as co-evolution of education, search and practice. Such a learning process that fuses numeracy, literacy, skills, entrepreneurship, and practice is also called a “New Renaissance”. It is believed that solutions to major problems (e.g. worsening inequality under globalization, struggles to find cures to new diseases, food security for all, crises of natural resources such as fresh water, cyber security, damages to biodiversity, and climate change) can only be made through complex collaborative efforts.
Indonesia’s sons and daughters studying under the dual university education at Prasetiya Mulya are posed to become “plenary citizens”—who believe in human progress; who believe in the advancement of science and preservation of human sanctity; who believe in the co-evolution of competition and cooperation that drive human progress; who believe in cross-regional, cross-ethnic, and inter-faith brotherhood as manifestation of a plural nationhood; and who keep abreast with the frontiers of civilization while keeping their feet firmly on their archipelagic motherland Indonesia.
We look forward to collaborating with students, parents, academic facilitators, researchers, and actors of life, especially entrepreneurs and business professionals, to create Prasetiya Mulya University an open agora for the 21 st century learning.
Citizens’ Learning Landscape for the Intellectualization of the Nation Through the Development of Superior Entrepreneurs
Since its inception as a higher-education institution in 1982, Prasetiya Mulya has adhered to its mission: to participate in a national effort of promoting the plural Indonesia into a superior nation by advancing the business world. The year 2016 sees a new beginning for the big family of Prasetiya Mulya with the transformation of Prasetiya Mulya School of Economics to Prasetiya Mulya University.
Moving toward the knowledge-society era after many years of creative involvement in management education in the country, Prasetiya Mulya has now widened its services to various sectors of study: Business Economics, Tourism, International Business Law, Food Technology, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, Product Design Engineering and Business Mathematics.
With this service expansion, Prasetiya Mulya’s contribution will be far greater and more creative than ever in impacting positively to the intellectual development of this pluralistic and superior Indonesian nation.
