About the Centre

The Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS) was established on 9 January 2024 and officially inaugurated on 12 June 2024 as part of Universitas Prasetiya Mulya. The need to create such a research centre is primarily driven by changes around Indonesia, especially within East Asia region.

The region, which consists of Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia, has clearly become the geopolitical and geoeconomic centre of gravity of the world. The key development has been remarkable economic progress in regional countries, especially Japan, South Korea, some members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the most phenomenal of all, China.

East Asia region, that represents 28.13 percent of world population, has a combined GDP of USD 60 trillion in 2022. Trade has been a key driver of development in the region, accounting for 17 percent of global trade in goods and services. Intra-regional trade and cooperation has also expanded rapidly over the last two decades. It is in this region also where remarkable technological modernization and innovation, especially in new emerging technologies, are taking place at an unprecedented pace. The region is undergoing strategic transformation of historic proportion.

This strategic transformation is of paramount importance for Indonesia’s economic, business, trade, and technology developments. As an active participant in promoting cooperation among countries in this region, it is imperative for us to build a deep understanding and knowledge about East Asia. This understanding is required if we are to strengthen cooperation with countries in the region and ensure our active and informed participation in shaping the region’s future.

With Universitas Prasetiya Mulya as a catalyst, teaching and research programs in East Asia are necessary parts of the portfolio in transforming the universitas into “a full-fledged university,” although the stages are adjusted to conditions from time to time. In this context, the Centre aims to conduct and promote research and studies on latest developments of the region, explore challenges and opportunities for Indonesia, and provide research-based policy analysis on how Indonesia could expand and strengthen its engagement in East Asia.

The CEAS is a collaborative platform for learning about East Asia. It fosters teaching, research, and regional connectivity among higher education institutions and research centers, both within and outside our university. The Centre, established by Rector’s Decree No. 0/2/01/02/0041/01/ 2024 on January 9, 2024, is a testament to our shared commitment to East Asian studies.
